What is a catheter?
In medical terminology, Catheters are tubes that can be inserted into a body cavity, vessel or duct, allowing drainage, injection of fluids or access by instruments (surgical).

There are 3 main types of catheters

1. Indwelling Catheters (Foley catheters)
2. Condom/External Catheters
3. Intermittent (Short-term) Catheters

Indwelling Catheters

Catheters that are left inside the body or bladder either temporarily or permanently is often referred to as indwelling catheters. The most common type of indwelling catheter is known as Foley catheters. Permcath is when catheters are inserted permanently. Indwelling catheters are usually attached to a drainage bag to collect the urine. Most often, indwelling catheters are inserted through the urethra.
Foley Catheters often comes with a balloon attachment on one end. Immediately following the insertion of a Foley catheter the balloon section is filled with sterile water. This prevents the catheter from leaving the bladder.

External Condom Catheters

This type of catheter does not require any insertion into the bladder or penis. They are often used as an alternative to an Indwelling catheter and are placed over the penis. The condom catheter then connects to a drainage bag.

Intermittent Catheters

Intermittent catheters are mostly used by people who need catheters for a short period of time and who has permanent urinary incontinence or urinary retention. Intermittent catheterization may be necessary for those who are unable to empty their bladder properly and those with certain neurological disorders. Intermittent catheters are also designed for those who are able to perform the procedure.
Intermittent catheters come in Straight and Coude (Curved) tips. A Coude catheter is often used to catheterize in men but can also be used in females. A Coude catheter is usually bent or in medical terms curved at the tip. This makes it easier to navigate past the prostate and is more comfortable for females to insert. Coude catheters can also help protect against damages, stricture, and scarring.
